What is World Egg Day and Why do we Celebrate it?
Happy World Egg Day! Every year, on the second Friday in October, people across the world host fundraisers, parties, marketing campaigns, and cook-alongs to celebrate this day. But what is world egg day and why do we celebrate it?
Where does World Egg Day come from?
World Egg Day was established in 1996, 25 years ago as of 2021. The day was established in Vienna, Austria by the International Egg Commission (IEC). World Egg Day is essentially a global celebration of the humble egg, with a specific focus on showcasing how eggs are affordable and high-quality nutrition.
Suresh Chitturi, the Chairman of the IEC, had the following to say about World Egg Day, “World Egg Day is always a fantastic opportunity to honour the incredible benefits of eating eggs, and we love to see how different cultures and areas of the world celebrate.” Chitturi went on to detail his hopes for the 2021 celebrations, “We’re hoping to see even more energy and enthusiasm from egg businesses and associations this year, and we’re excited to hear about all the new ways people choose to spend the day.”
World Egg Day Celebrations across the World
In 2020, celebrants across the world concocted ingenious new ways of celebrating the egg. In Brazil, they hosted a week-long digital series that included YouTube videos to encourage young children to eat more eggs. Brazil also played host to an Egg Music Festival, with songs dedicated to eggs. Down under, Australia Egg celebrated by hosting a social media campaign to pick Australia’s favourite egg dish. Nepal also included a digital spin on celebrations, with the International Veterinary Students Association hosting a podcast entitled ‘Egg-cellence; Production to Plate’. In China, participants attended a World Egg Day China conference. The theme of the conference was “Excellent Egg Quality- Toward a Brilliant Future.”. In the United States of America, Centre Fresh hosted an Omelette Breakfast giveaway, where they cooked eggy breakfasts to give to the local community.
